Visas & Safety

Up to 100 countries can enter Brazil without visas. Check if you are visa exempt.

Entry into Brazil using the visa exemption for United Kingdom requires:

  1. A UK valid Passport (6 months validity before expire)
  2. One blank passport visa page.

Upon arrival in Rio de Janeiro, you will be directed to an immigration lane reserved for people with disabilities and you will be processed very quickly.

If you encounter a medical emergency or are a victim of a crime in Rio de Janeiro, contact the local authorities immediately. The number to dial for police, fire or emergency medical assistance in Brazil is 911.

Airport Accessibility

There are two major airports in Rio de Janeiro, one for international travels and the other for domestic travels. Namely; Galeão International Airport (GIG) and Santos Dumont Airport. Antonios Carlos Jobim a.k.a GIG is Brazil second busiest airport with two terminals with clear signs for departure or check-in. You should request a disability assistance services before traveling and through your airline journey. Boarding is via a jet bridge and deplaning might be through Ambulift.

Attractions & Sights

Majority of all tourist attraction is accessible to most wheelchair users. Various art museum to visit, like, Rio art museum, also, you can really get close to the Christ the redeemer Statue, and many other attractions. Sugarloaf Mountain is accessible through cable car lines, from the ground to Urca Hill, and from Urca Hill to Sugarloaf Mountain. The famous Copacabana beach is accessible using beach wheelchairs and it's free. JW Marriott Hotel is located close to Copacabana Beach, "the centre of action" and in front of the hotel are various bus route, a wheelchair accessible Siqueira Campos metro less that is less than half a mile away, leading to all the main attractions.

Public Transportations

Rio de Janeiro is best known for its accommodation for wheelchair travel in the whole of South America. The public transportation consist of Metro trains, Trams, and Buses. It is free to travel for all wheelchair user on public transports. All city buses in Rio de Janeiro are all wheelchair accessible with lift at the centre. The bus stops are all well marked and google maps will help to get you around. The Subway system is all wheelchair accessible from the streets to the ticketing purchasing area.The blue wheelchair sign is available to direct you on which elevator to use. The VLT ( Light Rail orTram) is also wheelchair accessible at the street level. Boarding is easy and there is no gap between platform and tram

Wheelchair Taxis

Taxis are more convenient way to travel because they are more accessible and there is also a dedicated wheelchair accessible transportation service called Especial Coop. The Especial coop operates a fleet of wheelchair accessible taxis, equipped with a wheelchair lift that can carry heavy powered wheelchairs to all tourist attractions and airport transfers.

Sidewalks Access

Most sidewalks are easy to navigate with the help of curbs, ramps, and crosswalk signals. Some of the crosswalks signals are not available and you must watch out for oncoming traffic when crossing a street. Some curbs are high, steep, and some sidewalks surfaces are broken. They include brick cobblestone, potholes, cracks, and littered. So, Watch out for obstacles. There are dedicated bicycle lane, that you can use, that provides a more smoother surface for your wheelchair.
